About First Grade
First grade is so much fun! We have a lot of hard work to do, but we have a lot of fun learning. Each day we will practice reading and reading skills, math, spelling, science, social studies, language, and more! We will participate in literacy corners and guided reading groups as well. Each day we have PALS in which we work on our reading skills with a partner. Our class will also attend encore classes - music, gym, art, library, and computers. Mrs. Cook has counseling with us on Thursdays. In first grade, we have homework each Tuesday night! We have spelling tests each week with a pre-test on Thursday (practice test) and test on Friday. Students who get a 100% on Thursday do not have to test again Friday! After Christmas break, we have the spelling word test on Thursday and a sentence dictation test on Friday. In March we will follow the Iditarod race with an interesting and exciting unit! We take a couple of field trips and get to do a lot of great activities throughout the year!
At Clippard School, we practice social skills using the Boys Town method. If you would like to learn more about the Boys Town Social Skills, check out this link on Mrs. Janet's website: Boys Town Social Skills
We also have a School Wide Positive Behavior System, and our motto is "GRR - Go safely, Respectfully, and Responsibly." Students earn individual GRR tickets for showing that they are safe, respectful, and responsible. We even earn class tickets!
A class newsletter will be sent home each Friday with the students (or the last day of the school week if we are off school). The newsletter will include information for the upcoming week, spelling words, news, and a calendar. The newsletter will also be posted online each week.
Communication with parents or guardians is very important to me! Please feel free to contact me at any time, via e-mail or by phone. The best time to reach me at school is between 1:00-1:30 PM any day, or anytime before or after school. You can also send notes with your responsible child. Together we can make your child's first grade year very successful!
